EADS: The European Aircraft Manufacturing Major The US aerospace and defence industry started to consolidate after the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s. The consolidation resulted in the formation of a few US-based aerospace and defence companies – Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon that harboured world-class technology and took advantage of the US federal subsidies. However, during the same period, the European aerospace and defence industry was fragmented. Majority of the European companies sourced technology from their US counterparts through joint ventures. Meanwhile, European countries formed the European Union (EU) to create a single market for goods and services without economic and technological barriers... Competitive Strategies in the US Market In late 2004, EADS opened a helicopter manufacturing plant in Mississippi, US. Ralph D.Crosby, said, "This is the most significant event in the history of EADS North America. This is a symbol that reflects our dedication to building our presence in America. We are investing in facilities, and also are investing in the future of our work force". By the end of 2004, it was estimated that EADS North America sold more than 2,000 EuroCopter helicopters to the US Coast Guard, Border Patrol and to the Department of Homeland Security.. |
